Supreme Audit Institutions from Portuguese speaking countries meet and agree on next steps to advance Sustainable Development Goals

Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) met in the city of Funchal, Madeira (Portugal) to discuss the role of Court of Auditors to advance the Sustainable Development Goals. The workshop also counted with the presence and support of the Pro PALOP-TL SAI project representatives. 
 
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of goals to end poverty protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all as part of the new UN sustainable development agenda: the 2030 Agenda. 
 
The representatives of Supreme Audit Institutions from Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, Timor-Leste and Macau are aware that the SDGs open new opportunities and challenges for external and independent control of public finances, especially for auditing. It was recognized the need to develop and strengthen the capacities of SAIs to face and overcome challenges.  
 
Realizing the importance to promote and obtain concrete results in regards to the SDGS and to be able to showcase to citizens how public resources are allocated, SAIs agreed and committed themselves to concrete lines of action and elaborated the Funchal declaration. Planned lines of action include close collaboration with partners such as UNDP, IDI and GIZ to analyze the country members preparations for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals; invest in professional training through training and workshops in regards to monitoring and supervision of SDGs implementation; coordinated audits; and evaluation of the impact of public policies.
