The Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution urging the Central government to enact the Women’s Reservation Bill providing for 33% reservation for women in Parliament and State legislatures.
Moving the resolution during a discussion on ‘Women empowerment and child rights protection - The role of Amaravati Declaration,’ Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said it had been a long-pending demand. The Centre should have no doubt about the importance of political empowerment of women, which would be possible only when 33% reservation was provided to them in Parliament and State legislatures.
Mr. Naidu said the State government enjoyed the distinction of providing 33% reservation for women in government jobs, local bodies, and in educational institutions, and was committed to replicating the same in the political arena. The Assembly passed another resolution reaffirming its commitment to implementing the Amaravati Declaration in its true spirit.
