This short document starts with a reflection on a debate held in the Ethiopian Parliament about a specific presidential speech. The debate made clear that the statements of the opposition and of the government reflected shared concerns. This fact leads the text to the subject of “loyal or official oppositions”, a concept Ethiopia is not sufficiently familiar with yet. Therefore, the text explains the concept of “loyal opposition” and elaborated upon the rights and duties of the opposition in order to secure parliamentary democracy. Throughout the document, theory on oppositions is compared with the Ethiopian oppositional practice.
