This article starts with an introductory note on the historical background and current status of parliamentary groups. The second chapter is a report on the status and function of parliamentary groups in 34 different countries. The report is based on questionnaires and reveals information on the following topics: countries’ definitions of parliamentary groups, the legal nature of parliamentary groups, the rules for their establishment, the internal organization of parliamentary groups, and their functions and powers.
