The genuine participation of all citizens – the right to vote and to be elected - is a fundamental democratic principle. Yet, persons with intellectual or psychosocial disabilities are still often excluded from political processes.

Through the framework of a joint programme funded through the UN Partnership on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Multi Partner Trust Fund (UNPRPD MPTF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with Inclusion International, has developed a new practical guide on how to strengthen the political participation of persons with intellectual or psychosocial disabilities. In keeping with the principle Nothing About Us Without Us this publication was developed through a highly participatory process including focus groups with persons with intellectual or psychosocial disabilities from all around the world. The guide, also available in Easy Read version, is designed to be a practical tool for governments, election management bodies, organizations of persons with disabilities, civil society organizations, and electoral assistance providers.
