The Parliament House will soon be establishing a crèche facility on its premises and a senior official has also been deputed to manage it.

The 1500 sq-ft centre, to be run by professionals, will also have a separate feeding room to aid mothers, a media release from Ministry of Women and Child Development said.

Last year, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan notified the setting up of a crèche at the Parliament premises after Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi wrote a letter in this regard.

In her letter, Ms. Gandhi had pointed out that since over one-third of the total number of the officials working in the Parliament were women, the provision of a crèche facility was crucial.

Thanking the Speaker, Ms. Gandhi said it was “a momentous step towards ensuring Women Empowerment at workplaces.”

The issue was raised in both the Houses of Parliament by MPs too during the debate on Maternity Benefit amendments. The Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017 makes it mandatory for workplaces with more than 50 employees to provide mandatory crèche facility.
