Few comparative studies exist on internal party candidate selection and vetting processes, resulting in a dearth of examples that political parties can draw from to establish and/or strengthen their internal review and selection mechanisms. This study aims to begin to fill this gap. The study provides an extensive literature review and case studies on how parties in Latin America have explored and implemented candidate vetting processes. These sections aim to help readers gain a better understanding of candidate vetting and, in particular, the complexities of the issues addressed. Based on a literature review and case studies, this study puts forth recommendations for political party officials, legislatures and electoral bodies seeking to use internal party candidate vetting mechanisms as an entry point to improve transparency, accountability and public confidence in government.
