Artificial intelligence offers opportunities to improve the efficiency, inclusiveness and transparency of electoral processes. However, it also presents risks, including misinformation, disinformation, cyberattacks and algorithmic bias, which could undermine elections and democratic consolidation.

This paper from International IDEA, co-published with ECF-SADC, explores the responsible integration of AI into electoral processes across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. Aimed primarily at policymakers and electoral management bodies, it recommends strengthening legal and policy frameworks, investing in cybersecurity and digital infrastructure, building institutional and technical capacity, and promoting regional cooperation.
