Attention to the problem of corruption has grown significantly over the past decades. This document is produced by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and focuses on research, policy highlights and ways forward in corruption and anti-corruption efforts. After a definition of the concept, the causes and effects are briefly examined, followed by some corruption typologies and an examination of several anti-corruption efforts. The background note concludes with challenges and risks in combating corruption and some suggestions for the way forward.
