Departmental select committees are cross‐party groups of MPs responsible for the scrutiny of government departments. Their role is to examine the ‘expenditure, administration and policy' of the relevant government department and its 'associated public bodies'. They determine their own subjects for inquiry, gather written and oral evidence and make reports to the House.
