Reimagining Public Finance:
A Global Dialogue with the Parliamentary Community
Parliaments play a fundamental role in public finance matters across most countries, including by:
(a) setting the legal framework that governs the ways in in which public finance decisions are taken and the systems through which they are implemented;
(b) discussing and approving the government’s yearly fiscal plans, including the policy objectives that they are meant to help achieve; and
(c) providing oversight and holding government accountable for policy implementation and results, both through direct monitoring and through the review, approval and follow-up to audit findings and recommendations.
Engaging parliamentary voices in reimagining public finance is essential, as they represent diverse societal interests and help align reforms with public priorities. This involvement can help ensure that public finance choices address inequities, reflect citizens’ needs, and uphold democratic principles in decision-making processes.
In recognition of the role that Parliaments play, and with a view to strengthening it, the AGORA Parliamentary Development Community of Practice, in collaboration with the World Bank, is organizing a webinar to discuss the Reimagining Public Finance initiative and gather feedback and contributions from the global parliamentary community to be incorporated in the initiative going forward.
