New Initiatives on Conflict Prevention and Human Security: Proposals for the Establishment of an International Panel & Parliamentarians Network

Keywords: Preventive Diplomacy - Conflict Prevention - Parliamentary Panel - Comprehensive approach

In response to the paucity of strategies and the lack of political will on the part of national governments and the international community, the EastWest Institute (EWI) with the financial support of the Swiss and German governments, established a multi-year International Task Force on Preventive Diplomacy (Task Force) in May 2007, as the flagship of its Conflict Prevention Program. This text sets out the aims of this Task Force, in particular its desire to launch an international parliamentary panel that would serve as a tool for preventive diplomacy. While the proposals contained herein may be read individually, they are a set of interlinked advisory and advocacy mechanisms that together seeks to provide a comprehensive approach to policy development for preventive action in the medium to long term.
