Public participation is a fundamental dimension of democracy and an important factor in the strengthening and maturing of democracies. The latter is of particular interest and importance in a young and prominent democracy like South Africa, and this paper indicates good examples and opportunities are emerging, which, if nurtured, can set a trend and example on the Continent and internationally.
