Parliaments and the Paris Agreement

As the world’s governments come together for the annual gathering of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, there is a deep sense of foreboding. The latest report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has confirmed that every region on Earth is experiencing dangerous climate change as a result of human
activity. The UN Secretary General calls this moment ‘code red’ for the planet.

Parliaments and the Paris Agreement, a new report sponsored by WFD, involving three leading parliamentary organisations, ParlAmericas, INTER PARES, and GLOBE International, explores how parliaments from across the world have responded to the Paris Agreement, five years after these climate pledges were first made.

It is a timely occasion to reflect on the role the parliaments have played in advancing these international climate commitments. This report seeks to provide a snapshot of action to date by parliaments to respond to the challenge of the Paris Agreement and the commitments it demands from national governments and member states.
